Oliver Clarke: Scoring the First Points

So here is my first blog of the F4 championship, and it comes with great news, my first points on the table!

Back in March I decided to take the leap and leave not only my kart racing but the UK and step out into single-seaters in the USA.  At 15 years old I was well known in karting and had great achievements, but it was time to move on to a new motorsport. After only a handful of days testing my mind was made up and I applied for my SCCA Pro licence and made the leap ‘across the pond’.

It has been and continues to be an exciting and interesting journey. Still at school, back here in the UK with exams, I can only travel to the USA for each race round so each time I go into the track with still so much to learn about the car, the track and the racing. But each round I give it my all.

VIR was my debut: lots to take in, a new country, peers and a new team. The first race wasn’t to plan, and then I clocked up results in the 20s. I had made my start in F4.

Atlanta was three finishes in the bag, 20s again and a 15th. I was making my way up the results board. Pittsburgh was so close to the points, 11th place, frustrating to miss out. I was travelling home to the UK thinking about how I could have got into the points if I could race it again. Then New Jersey, came and I really really wanted to make my mark, only four rounds to my credit but determined to get under top-10. Race 2 didn’t go to plan, making a move to overtake but getting some damage I had to write that one off, but Race 3 was different. I got a good start and went with the pack. Then made the most of the restarts, taking my opportunities to overtake. Took the checkered flag in eighth, then promoted to seventh on official results. I was so pleased to get the points but like any sportsman, the thoughts after the race turn to how that could have been an even higher place. I always want more unless it is the top of the podium, only that is good enough.

I am looking forward to COTA, it will be an amazing experience to be part of the F1 atmosphere there. As always I will focus on the drive and be determined to race to my absolute best with an eye to improving on the seventh place from New Jersey.

All the best,

Oliver
