Brendon Leitch: Winning Strategy

We finished Canadian Tire Motorsport park (or Mosport to most of us) four weeks ago, 16th in the Championship, walking away with some hard earned points on the board. CTMP was incredibly hot. The track was slippery and very very fast.  Kiwi Motorsport ran two cars and it was great to be able to compare notes and data to help each other.  I knew the car was quick, and I've worked hard to alter my driving style to suit it, really moving back to the way I would drive a Formula Ford.  It's probably fair to say when I flew back to America to drive to Ohio with the team, I was feeling much more confident.

Wednesday morning the team and I arrived at the track for a setup day to prep the car and get everything sorted out including going on a track walk. Mid-Ohio is an iconic American circuit, older in style and very fast.

Thursday we had three test sessions which went really well making a few small changes to the car and some minor tweaks to my driving style as I grew more comfortable with the car. We ended testing in ninth place with a little bit of pace to find.

Friday morning started with qualifying. We went out on a very cold and slightly damp track at 8 a.m. It was really hard to push as the track was so cold that the tires struggled to get up to temperature. We kept jumping to the top of the time sheets as the track improved. After 10 laps or so I decided to call it quits while I was on top with a good margin to save tires.  We fell back to 8th but we were happy knowing my tires were 10 laps fresher than the other competitors.

As Race 1 approached, the dark clouds started to come in very quickly and saturated the track. Everybody grided up on wet tires.  We decided with 5 minutes before release that the track was improving dramatically so we changed to the slicks. Five other cars then followed suit. We got off to a good clean start down to Turn 1 before being taken out by another car who lost control and dropped me back to 19th position. Pushing on and finding the drying parts of the track, I managed to start making my way back through the field.

With two laps to go I found myself in second position with a big gap to first, but I was closing fast. On the second to last corner on the final lap I was only half a second off the lead car, when the clouds burst and the rain came in. I noticed before the car ahead and got it pulled up in time as the leading car went into the gravel. We were a bit sideways, but I hung on taking the race win by 9.7 seconds, and setting the fastest lap of the race.

It was still wet for race two and race control deemed a rolling start for the conditions. I was starting from pole position in my first rolling start. At home, in New Zealand, this would be single file but over here, it was a two-by-two start.  I came through Turn 1 in first place and on the exit clipped the curb, throwing the car into a 360. After gathering it all up I was about 11th. I started my charge forward, again.  Moving through the field I made it up to P3. We only had 6 racing laps and the rest under safety car due to other drivers spearing off in the tricky conditions. We had to settle for 3rd, but with good pace - I set the third fastest time, while passing, making that my starting position for the final race.

Saturday greeted us with clear blue sky and a dry track.  Race 3 got underway in full dry conditions and we got through the first corner in one piece and then pushed on. Sitting in the top-three, we started to pull away from the pack. Charging on I managed to pressure the car in second into a mistake and claimed second place. After a safety car restart I was all over the gearbox of championship leader Kyle Kirkwood. We were virtually identical in race pace which made it hard to overtake; although I did manage to force him into a mistake but I was unable to capitalize on it. After a very hard fought race I ended up second with a big gap back to third and some big improvements in my pace.

The icing on the cake was finding out that I had collected the most points of the weekend, won the round and leapfrogged my way into 5th overall in the Championship.  I can't thank the team at Kiwi Motorsport enough for giving me a great car.

At this point in the season, it gets a little quick fire so I am staying up in the USA until after the September Circuit of the Americas round, where we are support for the World Endurance Championship.  The F4 Series has also announced an additional round at COTA in October, where we will be a Support class to Formula 1.

We only have two weeks until we're on track again at Virginia International Raceway, so for now it's head down training and prepping the car at Onroak's workshop.

I can't thank you all enough for the support and opportunity you have given me.

Tonight I have a chat with D'Arcy on Radio Sport at 6pm, tune in to listen!

Cheers!
