As Americans joined together last week to celebrate Thanksgiving with their families, two Formula 4 United States Championship Powered by Honda drivers learned that their actions outside of the car can be more impactful as the actions inside of it.
Parker Locke of San Antonio and Kyle Kirkwood of Jupiter, Florida, spent the holidays serving others in their community.
Locke, 16, volunteers weekly at the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas, preparing and serving dinner to children, as well as their families, who receive grief counselling at the center after the death of an immediate family member.
“I’ve been volunteering at the Children’s Bereavement Center for about three years now,” Locke said. “We serve about 60 families a week. While a death of a family member is hard, losing them during the holidays takes an even harder toll on the children and their families. Food joins the masses and brings people together during difficult times, uniting and comforting grieving families. Something as simple as providing a hot meal, can make all the difference in their day. Serving my community has really opened my eyes to how such simple gestures can make such a big impact in someone’s life.”
Kirkwood, 19, prepped individual Thanksgiving dinners for wounded warriors and others in need in the South Florida area with the Big Heart Brigade.
“The mission of the Big Heart Brigade is to enrich the lives of vets and others in need by providing a Thanksgiving meal and much needed support to our community. Both of my grandfathers were war veterans and they were always heroes in my eyes, so I wanted to give back to those who sacrificed so much,” Kirkwood said. “This was my first year volunteering with Big Heart Brigade and it was an incredibly humbling experience to serve such a great cause. During my shift, I was part of 100 volunteers who plated and packaged about 4,000 meals per hour to send to those in need. By Thanksgiving, they delivered more than 75,000 meals.”
