Yeany takes title hopes to Florida while Round-Garrido joins VRD FR Americas effort
September 23, 2020 – With the second half of the season now upon us, Velocity Racing Development (VRD) is aiming to continue their momentum. As the current championship point leader in the Formula 4 United States Championship Powered by Honda, and a new competitor in the FR Americas Championship, VRD will bring three drivers to the Sebring International Raceway this weekend.
With a fifty-one-point lead in the F4 United States Championship Powered by Honda, Yeany will lead the field of drivers into the bumpy Sebring International Raceway as he looks to put a stranglehold on the title. With five victories on the season, Yeany will have three more chances this weekend to stand on the top step of the podium to show that he is ready for advancement up the motorsports ladder.
Erik Evans will be back behind the wheel of the Storm & Savage Apparel #29 entry as he makes his first F4 series start at Sebring. Testing at the facility a few weeks ago during an SCCA event weekend, Evans showed great speed in both dry and wet weather action and looks to make it a powerful 1 – 2 punch for the Velocity Racing Development efforts.
“We will keep pushing this weekend with both Hunter and Erik as there is no time to let or get complacent as the series continues to roll along,” expressed Dan Mitchell. “We set goals back at the beginning of 2020 and are committed to meeting and exceeding them before the final checkered flag of the season.”
“It looks like rain is in the forecast for the Florida races coming up,” expressed championship point leader Hunter Yeany. “Either way I’m prepared and looking forward to the challenge at hand.”
Erik Evans added, “I am very comfortable and confident coming into Sebring and am expecting a strong result off the second-place finish at the SCCA event a few weeks ago here against some of the top drivers in the series. My main goal is to be fighting in the top-five, but the overall objective is to be always fighting for the win. The big thing for the second half of the season is to make a good run at the front after a very rough and unexpected start to 2020.”
“We are so happy to be back on the grid in FR Americas with Matt Round-Garrido,” added Dan Mitchell. “We are looking to ruffle some feathers in FR just like we have in our F4 side of the program this season.”
As mentioned, joining Yeany and Evans this weekend will be a new competitor to the FR Americas Championship powered by Honda series in Matt Round-Garrido. A consistent frontrunner in other open-wheel programs, Round-Garrido will bring his talents to the VRD prepared Ligier JSF3. Exploring options for 2021, Round-Garrido will gain some knowledge and experience as he considers his program of choice for the upcoming season.
With regular season drivers set for this weekend’s coming event, VRD Academy competitors performed multiple test days in the past few weeks. Turning laps at the Sebring International Raceway and the Homestead-Miami Speedway, Nikita Johnson, Mateo Rubio-Luengo and Jimmie Lockhart had additional successful outings as they prepare for their future in open-wheel motorsports.
Velocity Racing Development drivers will hit the track on Friday for a pair of practice sessions before qualifying and the first race of the weekend roll off the grid on Saturday. Sunday will be the home for the second and third wheel-to-wheel events as teams and competitors complete the first event in back-to-back weekends in the Sunshine State.
